Films

A film is a great surrogate for life. Everything you miss in regular life becomes part of your experience through film. Movies create an ideal image of real life. All people are beautiful, love is total, perfect and completely loyal. The action is heroic. Everything people say is interesting. All boring moments have been removed. A film is good if you are no longer aware of sitting in a chair watching a movie.

These are my 10 favorite films:

Title Director Actors Comment
1.Titanic (1997) James Cameron Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet This movie is everything that a film can and should be. Interesting subject. Drama. Life and death romance. Beautiful historical perspective. Action which feels like you are there yourself. Tremendous beauty of Titanic. At the time it was made this was the most expensive film of all time. And it doesn't show in the form of blunt spectacle. But it did result in perfect images. This film was made with such expertise that you can feel the overwhelming machines of Titanic while sitting in your chair.
2.The English Patient (1996) Anthony Minghella Ralph Fiennes, Kristin Scott Thomas, Juliette Binoche, Willem Dafoe For me the most emotionally overwhelming film ever made. Overdramatized? Of course - that's what great movies are all about.
3.Once Upon a Time in the West (1969) Sergio Leone Claudia Cardinale, Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson, Jason Robards Great story. Beautifully slow and still every second is interesting. Beautifully cut, beautiful music, beautiful dialog. Best western ever made.
4.Brazil (1985) Terry Gilliam Jonathan Pryce, Robert De Niro, Katherine Helmond, Michael Palin, Kim Greist Terry Gilliam's master work. Similar theme as 1984, but good and funny. Tremendously powerful image of a society ruled by bureaucracy.
5.Blade Runner (1982) Ridley Scott Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young It rains throughout the film. The film is expertly made in a very intriguing style. The movie is about man-made-machines who acquire emotions. Philosophically challenging.
6.Total Recall (1990) Paul Verhoeven Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sharon Stone Universal human struggle for freedom in the setting of planet Mars. Contains high quality action, humor, dialogue and originality.
7.Doctor Zhivago (1965) David Lean Omar Sharif, Julie Christie, Alec Guinness, Klaus Kinski Beautifully gripping drama with excellent critical view of communism.
8.De Jurk (1996) Alex van Warmerdam Alex van Warmerdam, Annet Malherbe, Olga Zuiderhoek, Henri Garcin How can you describe a film like this? Such a film can only be made in Holland. Strong refreshing style. Very funny and professional.
9.Basic Instinct (1992) Paul Verhoeven Michael Douglas, Sharon Stone, Jeanne Tripplehorn This is real high quality suspense. Already the classic thriller. Sharon Stone is very special (and desirable!) here in her best role ever.
10.Life of Brian (1979) Terry Jones Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Michael Palin A beautiful, funny, original defense of freedom and individuality. A strong parody of Christianity in a historical perspective.

160 other very good films:

* These are six films which I saw in a row in the cinema (during 4 days in 2006) and all six were very good films.

Films which I haven't seen yet, but plan to:

If I forgot a film, or if I mistakenly think a film is good which isn't, then please email me.
